  I was terribly disappointed by the BnB. I found the host to be a curt and hostile man who insinuated that I could not afford the accommodation and was attempting to get out of paying for my stay. I had told him that I would not pay for the night in which I did not have electricity in the freezing cold room called the "Garden Room", which is precisely as Ichstr has described.
  
  The proprietor did not explain what was wrong with the electricity, did not offer a candle or an extra duvet to keep me warm. The proprietor merely informed me that the electrical fault would be fixed in the morning and left me in the dark to fumble around. Mind you, it was the middle of winter and the door to this room does not shut so there is a constant draft. Finding this situation unacceptable, I threw on my nightgown, followed him up the stairs but the proprietor had already locked his doors. Since he is very hard of hearing, I had to knock really loudly on his door to get his attention. He never answered - I doubt anyone could be that hard of hearing. I finally heard voices and to my surprise, the proprietor had called the police on me!!!
  
  He called the police on me, lying to them that I was a "crazy woman" intruder who was attempting to gain access to his home. The police treated me so badly - the unfortunate assumption in ultra conservative WA being that all black people are trouble - and the proprietor obviously took full advantage of this stereotype, painting me in a bad light. I left the following morning, not expecting to see a refund and to merely take this incident up with the relevant authorities, which I have done.
  
  I ultimately did receive a refund from the guest house. I strongly suspect that the proprietor only provided a refund because a (white) friend intervened on my behalf and informed the proprietor that I wasn't just some black woman travelling alone but a top lawyer from Melbourne who was going to take this further. He immediately responded "They're going to take my license away". I believe that reaction shows that he knows that it is unacceptable to book guests into a room that does not have a locking door or electricity.
  
  I had a terrible experience. Truly a terrible experience. I came away feeling violated. My strong feeling (and that of friends who confronted the man) is that I found myself with a bigot. I can say that I checked into a hotel which cost $20 a night less than the guest house, was right on Cottlesloe beach and which was pure heaven. For this reason, I'd say, Perth offers much better options for single female travellers who prefer prompt, consistent and pleasant service.
